Robbie Staffen Ms. Lehmann English 1-1A 19 September 2018 Summary of “Night Calls” In the short story “Night Calls,” Lisa Fugard explains the importance of a relationship between a father and daughter. The narrator visits her dad hoping for a better connection’ but instead her father is distant. Unsure of where to start, Marlene’s father is depressed because of Marlene’s mother’s death. Her father almost leaves his jab and home, but decides not to because park officials put him in charge of a bird that is the last of its kind. Marlene and her father start to build a better relationship. One night, the heron escapes and dies. Marlene finds it and buries it so her father won’t find it. Marlene mimics the heron’s call to give her father hope.
